Photo - "My mom was a meth addict. The most hurtful part of that was her listening to everyone that told her I was better off without her so she left me with my grandma.( Who loved me but was abusive but not an addict) I saw some DV with her ex husband and was molested by someone no one would ever of suspected would do that. That ( the molestation) was not her fault nor a result of drug use. When I lived with her( my mom) at age 8-9, I bounced between her and my grandparents often . I was happy and cared for. The house wasn't dirty, we had food, we baked cookies together, I went to school. She was a better mom on drugs than sober to be honest. Her boyfriend (Bobby) then didn't abuse her and was great with me. I miss him to this day. Drug use isn't ideal but not every addict is beating, starving, molesting and neglecting their kids. That's why it alone is NOT suppose to be enough reason to remove kids. Clean people can be just as abusive and just because they don't use kids get left with them often.
I believe I'm a better mom clean but I didn't abuse, molest or neglect my kid when he was taken either. While in state care my non verbal special needs child lost all speech he had left and signs too. He regressed SO much! He was doped up on anti psychotic meds, sleep meds and unnecessarily strapped into a wheelchair. He showed up to visitation with injuries, bruises and hospital bracelets. I was court ordered not to email anymore about anything but my service plan because I was on top of that.
My kid was NEVER hurt like that in my care! He wasn't on meds, or in a wheelchair! He was learning and all his therapists listed me as a strength to him. I attended parent teacher conferences, ARD committee's and more. I did a better job with him using than the state did clean.
I did more than they asked me on my service plan and had been clean over a year but CPS still persued TPR. I settled on mediation to keep that from happening and after 3 YEARS I got him back. Not because CPS wanted that though.
My point is #CPSdoesNOTmeansafe like so many think it does.
CPS is a necessary evil but there needs to be MUCH more emphasis on removing the evil and just focusing on the necessary. Workers cry they are pulled too thin.... focus on kids in real danger and quit taking kids that have workable homes with loving parents and/ or families.
Yes for the kids that can't go to family members (likely rare) if reunification isn't an option then yes, they shouldn't have to languish in foster care. The whole system needs an overhaul. It would help to re direct the title 4 funding to reunification efforts rather than fast track adoption, stopping the gag orders, following law/ due process and having transparency is another step."
