Photo - “Just Following Orders” By Steven R. Isham In October of 1865 Henry Wirz, the commander of Camp Sumter, often referred to as Andersonville, was tried for war crimes. He was accused of causing the deaths of more than 13,000 prisoners of war from approximately 45,000 Union soldiers. He was convicted and hung for these crimes. His defense was that he was just following the orders of his superiors and had no other responsibilities to do anything else. Over the last 100 years plus, thousands of Native American children were taken from their homes and placed on “Boarding Schools” throughout Arizona. These children were taken away by force and against their family’s wishes. The “state” and “federal” government thought it was okay to do this and they knew better than a 5,000 year old culture on raising these children. There was no defense given, they just believed they knew better. The Nuremberg trials, ending in October 1946, were a series of military tribunals, held after World War II, which were most notable for the prosecution of prominent members of the political, military, judicial and economic leadership of Nazi Germany who planned, carried out, or otherwise participated in The Holocaust and other war crimes. Most of the defendants were hung or faced life imprisonment. Their defense was that they were just following orders of their superiors and therefore, not part of the war crimes. William Laws Calley Jr. is a former United States Army officer and convicted war criminal found guilty of murdering 22 unarmed South Vietnamese civilians in the My Lai Massacre on March 16, 1968, during the Vietnam War. His defense was that he was just following the orders of his superiors. In the next century, Arizona decided that it was okay to take thousands of children away from their families and place them in foster homes to receive federal funding. Almost 19,000 children were taken and placed in foster homes, shelters, treatment centers, and government offices. Many sexually, physically, emotionally, medically abused, and killed in these out of home placements. Accusations of genetic research and drug trials in hospitals were some of the many accusations made by parents and child and family advocates. Child Protective Service Investigators and Child Protective Service Case Managers lied, committed perjury, withheld exculpatory evidence, and stood idly by as these children and their families faced the onslaught of abuse by the State of Arizona. Their defense was that they were just doing their jobs and what they were “expected” to do; even if not in policy. Not a single investigation against these CPS workers ever occurred. The Arizona Governors, the Arizona Legislators, the Arizona Attorney Generals, the Maricopa County Attorneys, and Arizona Sheriff’s that turned a deaf ear and a blind eye to the pain and suffering of these innocent children and innocent families may one day stand before a tribunal for crimes against humanity. And if that never happens, they will one day stand before God and face the judgement for the silence and disregard for Arizona’s families and children. First they came for the Communists; and I did not speak out; because I was not a Communist Then they came for the Socialists; and I did not speak out; because I was not a Socialist Then they came for the trade unionists; and I did not speak out; because I was not a trade unionist Then they came for the Jews; and I did not speak out; because I was not a Jew Then they came for me; and there was no one left to speak out for me Pastor Martin Niemoller History repeats itself over and over again. Why? Because we do not learn from it. “And then they came for my neighbors children; and I did not speak out; because it was not my children” Steven R.
